Takahes




This report is about a bird which is called a takahe and it lives in New Zealand. You can find this bird in Tiritiri Matangi but this bird is very rare.


Takahes are very similar to Pukekos but they have a baby blue back with some green feathers covering its back. On the tip of its tail is a little white patch. Its face is dark blue and towards its back is a much lighter blue. Takahes also have an red mixed with orange beak and also red legs.

Takahes can grow up to 63 centimetres long and the average weight for a male is about 2.7 kgs and for a female is 2.3 kgs. The normal height for a Takahe is up to 50 cm long.

Takahes eat tussock, fern roots, mountain daisies, sedges, herbs and they one they really love are insects.
